Black granite stone. Granite (rock): characteristics and properties. Granite deposits. Interior and facade finishing

It can also be a stone with an almost perfectly smooth and almost matte deep black background. And a stone with a mesmerizing grayish-white pattern. It could also be a stone with thousands of sparks flickering mysteriously against a black background, which looks like a starry sky somewhere far from big cities.

Black granite can be used in interior decoration, either independently or in combination. In the first case, if you line the walls and floor with such stone, it will really look either very official or futuristic and technological. That is, in its independent form and over large finishing areas, black granite is most in demand in high-tech interiors and for finishing business offices. It will also be organic in minimalist style interiors. But in this case, it would still be better to dilute it with white or gray varieties.

But in products such as steps or countertops, everything will depend on the surroundings of black granite, while the stone itself will only be a bright and expressive accent. Black granite harmonizes perfectly with glass and metal, but it also looks great in combination with both light and dark wood.

And in terms of color range, this stone is absolutely universal. It can be combined with almost any shade of both warm and cold tones. In this case, the combinations will be quite organic with both bright colors and pastel ones. Combinations of black granite with white, red, yellow, and blue varieties can decorate the interior of any style and any mood. In combination with granites of a different color, black does not look strict and official at all. On the contrary, it emphasizes and enriches the color of the variety with which it is used in conjunction.

The most expressive and bright varieties of black granite from our company’s collection:

  • Absolute Black - Uniformly black granite, on the surface of which only very rarely can a lighter speck be found. The color of the stone is rich and deep, without sagging into gray or whitishness, and this property is preserved no matter how the stone is processed - be it polished or rough. With certain lighting and surface treatment of the stone, its texture becomes visible - uniform and consistent.
  • Black Galaxy - Black granite with not too frequent but bright splashes of white. Small and contrasting with the main tone of the stone, they create a feeling of radiance, glimpses from the thickness of the stone. This effect is reminiscent of the glow of stars in the night sky spread over an uninhabited tropical island. The saturation of the background shade can vary from side to side - it can be pure black, deep and mysterious, or it can be softer - closer to ebonite.
  • Black Cosmic- Original black granite with a pattern of silver and gold swirls. The variety of pattern shapes and iridescent shades make the stone picturesque and expressive. Thanks to the fairly light tones of the pattern, this granite generally does not look heavy, even when facing large areas, so it can be effectively used to create panels, decorate floors and walls, as well as spacious countertops.
  • Nero Zimbabwe - Solid black granite with a smooth, uniform background shade. Only on some slabs, using certain methods of surface finishing, it is possible to reveal dark gray inclusions and thus emphasize the texture of the stone, making it lighter - not completely black, but ebonite. Nero Zimbabwe is one of the ultra-durable granites, so it can be safely used for exterior decoration.
  • Asterix - Exquisite granite with a black background color, on which curls and swirls of lighter, grayish-silver tones are picturesquely scattered. The play of gradients from black to ashen creates an amazing visual effect of relief of the stone surface and volumetric details. Thanks to this, granite looks very impressive and luxurious.
  • Volga Blue- Granite is black in color with a slightly heterogeneous, chaotic pattern in the form of lighter inclusions. They can be pure gray or yellowish or greenish. Labradorite inclusions - shining juicy blue flashes - bring original variety to the stone pattern. They refresh the overall visual impression of the stone, smoothing out its seriousness and monumentality.
  • Marinace Black - Exotic scenic granite with a black background color and a very varied pattern. The inclusions of an irregular, usually streamlined shape look original and colorful. The main color scheme of the picture is white, gray, golden tones. At the same time, in bright, especially warm sunlight, lighter details - white and golden - come to the fore. Subdued lighting, on the contrary, makes the stone almost monochrome.

Granite is a very common material in construction due to its positive unique properties. Its large number of varieties and wide choice of colors allow it to be adapted to any interior. The beauty and special technical characteristics of this natural stone determine its wide popularity in the international construction market.

Specifications

Granite has many advantages that set it apart from other decorative stones:

  • Strength. Granite is twice as durable as marble, as it additionally contains quartz.
  • Resistant to significant temperature changes. Granite always retains its performance characteristics and excellent appearance even with significant temperature changes, unlike other materials. Granite is not susceptible to temperature changes of more than 100°C, so it can be used in the most extreme conditions.
  • Resistance to damage by microorganisms. Unlike marble and other materials, granite is less susceptible to infection by fungus and other microorganisms.
  • Fire resistance. Granite has a too high melting point (+700°C), which ensures its complete safety in case of fire.
  • Frost resistance. Due to the low water absorption coefficient of granite, it is very resistant to low temperatures. Therefore, it can be actively used in buildings, stairs, embankments and other objects.
  • Low water absorption coefficient. Granite does not absorb moisture, so it is excellent for cladding embankments, street stairs, and building facades. He is not afraid of either rain or snow.
  • Resistance to deformation.
  • Resistance to physical and chemical damage.

Among the disadvantages of granite is its heaviness. It is one of the heaviest finishing materials, which can make it a little difficult to use.

Varieties

Granite has a granular structure and is classified primarily by grain size. It is divided into the following types:

  • fine-grained (grain size up to 2 mm);
  • medium-grained (grain size 25 mm);
  • coarse-grained (grain size more than 5 mm).

Granite also varies in mineral composition.

The diversity of the internal chemical structure of granite is provided by the different proportions of the minerals it contains. The pattern on granite can be uniform, veined, layered.

Feldspar gives granite its color.

Granite comes in different colors:

White granite

This is a type of granite that has predominantly light shades with yellowish, grayish, and black inclusions. White granite never has a pure white color, as it always contains some inclusions.

Homogeneous white granite is characterized by a light background with a uniform structure of black and gray minerals. This type of white granite is produced in Italy and Spain, as well as in small quantities in Portugal, Canada, and Norway.

High-quality white granite is present on the construction market in limited quantities. The most famous commercial grades of homogeneous white granite are:

  • Blanco Cristal;
  • Blanco Real;
  • Bianco Baveno;
  • Bianco Sardo;
  • Caesar White;
  • Blanco Berrocal;
  • Tolga White.

Homogeneous white granite is excellent for buildings. They are often used to cover large surface areas. White granite makes the interior luxurious and sophisticated. Its presence in the interior indicates the high social status of the owner of the house and his wealth. White granite is ideal for decorating the interior of the corridor or hall of prestigious hotels and hotel complexes, theaters, and administrative buildings.

However, the use of white granite in the external cladding of buildings is extremely impractical. White granite has a significant drawback - it easily absorbs dirt due to its porous structure.

Over time, the pure white color of granite can turn into a dirty gray. It is for this reason that it is not recommended to use it in the external cladding of buildings. Also, it is not recommended to tile indoor floors with white granite.

Yellow granite

Yellow granite is mined in Brazil, Namibia, and India. The most famous commercial grades of homogeneous yellow granite are Amarelo Real and Giallo Antico. There are also varieties of veined yellow granite. The most famous of them are Juparana Colombo, Juparana Delicado, Juparana Champagne, Shivakashi. Veined yellow granite has various shades from light yellow to light brown. His design has intricate, interesting shapes. The veins are mainly composed of dark-colored minerals.

Among the layered yellow granites, one can distinguish such varieties as Santa Cecilia, Giallo Fiorito, Giallo Veneziano, which are mined in Brazil. They are distinguished from other types of yellow granite by rings of rich yellow color against a background of dark and light yellow minerals.

Yellow granite is especially good for the interior of buildings. They can be used to cover walls and floors and it will look very impressive. In addition, it is advisable to use large slabs in the cladding to enhance the design effect.

Red granite

The shades of this type of granite can vary from light pink to rich burgundy. Its deposits are quite common.

It is mined in Finland, India, Sweden, South Africa, and Brazil. also common in Ukraine.

Common varieties of homogeneous red granite are:

  • Balmoral Red FG;
  • Capao Bonito;
  • Rosso Braganza;
  • Tranas Red;
  • Imperial Red;
  • African Red.

Very often, homogeneous red granite is used in the cladding of prestigious buildings, as well as in the construction of monuments.

Veined red granite is characterized by the presence of veins in brick red and orange shades. The unusual pattern created by the veins will perfectly complement the interior and add a touch of originality to it.

The beauty of this stone is extraordinary. With its bright, rich color, red granite creates a festive, solemn atmosphere, due to which it is widely used in the decoration of administrative premises and the construction of monuments. It can be actively used in exterior decoration, since dirt on this stone is almost invisible.

Black granite

This type of granite has a fairly uniform structure and color. It comes in two commercial varieties – Nero Africa and Galaxy Black. The first grade is black-gray granite with a uniform structure. The second grade has a basic black background with uniform inclusions of small shining crystals. Black granite is produced in India and South Africa.

Black granite is used primarily in the design of building exteriors. It has excellent decorative properties. Its mesmerizing depth of color transforms any building into an architectural work of art. Various variations in the pattern of black granite, when viewed closely, resemble stars, galaxies and cosmic nebulae, creating the illusion of a night sky.

This stone is also widely used to create monuments and gravestones.

Gray granite

This type of granite has shades ranging from light gray to almost black. It usually has a fine-grained and coarse-grained pattern structure. The prevalence of gray granite is quite high; it is much more abundant in nature than white and black granite. Therefore, the cost of gray granite is usually lower.

High-quality gray granite is mined in Italy, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, and China. Among the varieties of homogeneous gray granite are:

  • Ghiandone Grigio;
  • Saint Louis;
  • Grigio Malaga;
  • Grigio Sardo;
  • Padang Light;
  • Gris Perla;
  • Grigio Sardo Champagne.

Layered gray granite has a mottled pattern created by gray, white and black minerals. The main varieties of layered gray granite:

  • Beola Ghiandonata;
  • Beola Bianca;
  • Beola Grigia;
  • Serizzo Formazza;
  • Serizzo Scuro Valmasino.

Gray granite will fit perfectly into the interior of modern offices. It can be used not only indoors, but also outdoors. Unlike white granite, dirt on it will be almost invisible, so it can be used in cladding floors, stairs, and building facades.

Chemical and structural composition of granite

Granite is an igneous rock with a hardness between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale and a density of 2600 kg/m3.

The word "Granite" is derived from the Latin "granum", which means "grain". Granite acquired this name because of its porous-grained structure.

The chemical composition of granite includes many mineral elements, the amount of which may vary in different types of granite. It contains various silicic acids, alkalis, and contains small amounts of magnesium, iron, and calcium.

The composition of granite includes:

  • quartz (30-40%);
  • feldspars – plagioclase and orthoclase (about 60-70%);
  • dark-colored minerals - biotite, tourmaline, hornblende (5-10%).

According to its mineral composition, granite is classified into:

  • Plagiogranite, which has a predominant amount of plagioclase (more than 90%).
  • Alaskite, which is characterized by little or no dark-colored minerals.
  • Biotite granite, which has a large amount of biotite inclusions (6-8%).
  • Alkaline granite, which contains a larger amount of potassium feldspar. Plagioclase is absent in this type of granite.
  • Hornblende granite containing large amounts of hornblende and biotite inclusions.

Appearance

Granite is a very beautiful material, which is why it is so often used in construction and indoors. There is a wide variety of granite shades, so it can be successfully combined with other decorative elements. Shades can be both bright and saturated, and neutral. The granite pattern is unique; its intricate patterns can complement the interior of the room in different ways.

Granite deposits

Granite is a fairly common rock, as it plays an important role in the structure of the Earth's crust.

Large deposits of granite have been found in Brazil, India, China, Scandinavian countries, the USA, and also in the CIS countries. In Russia there are about 50 granite quarries located in the Arkhangelsk, Voronezh regions, and in the Caucasus. On the territory of Ukraine, granite is mined in the Zhytomyr, Kirovograd, Transcarpathian, and Rivne regions.

In European countries, large granite deposits have been discovered in Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia.

In the United States, granite is mined in Wisconsin, Georgia, and South Dakota.

There are also rich deposits of granite on the territory of the Central Asian Republics - in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Application in the interior

With the help of granite, designers can create unique, inimitable compositions, highlight individual elements of the architecture of buildings, and make accents in the interior of premises. Granite is an ideal material for exterior decoration of buildings, construction of monuments, memorials, and tombstones. Granite is often used to decorate gardens and parks and install road surfaces.

In the global natural stone market, the largest commercial group is granites. Their production is growing by 7-8% per year, the volume of proven reserves exceeds 200 billion tons, and the value of the final product is estimated at tens of billions of dollars. However, the traditional one, which in China and India alone soon promises to exceed 50% of the global market, is far from the only representative of this commercial group. More than a dozen rocks included in it - labradorites, dolomites, jadeites, pegmatites and others - are not granites from a geological point of view. Moreover, the best of them belong to the group of basalts (a rock that is harder, denser and more water-resistant than classic granite) - having, as a rule, a monochrome black color and being extremely highly rated on the construction, architectural, decorative and especially ritual markets.

Physical reasons for black color

These stones are commonly called " black granite", and their most prominent representatives are Indian, Chinese Shanxi Black, African Zimbabwe Black- are known throughout the world. However, the following fact is interesting: widely known in Russia black gabbro diabase in terms of performance characteristics it is in no way inferior to these famous brands, but at the same time it is not usually called granite. The real reason for this is simple - all of the above grades of stone also do not belong to granites, and outside Russia (for example, in the world's most capacious markets of the USA and Europe) they are classified precisely as basalts, dolomites or gabbros.

But for what reason are the best granites or their analogues in terms of hardness and strength black? What gives them this color? The answer to this is quite simple and lies in the physical laws of light refraction. In order for a stone to visually look black, the internal structure of its crystal lattice must be as homogeneous as possible, and the faces of the crystals included in the rock must be positioned in such a way that light refraction occurs without scattering (i.e., “decomposition” of color into different wavelengths , perceived by the eye as different colors of the color spectrum). The smoothness of the surface also plays an important role - for example, any material with a crystalline structure (from granite to asphalt), when watered, immediately becomes significantly darker. The same thing happens with careful polishing (which is why stone floors and steps made of black stone are never made rough, but only provided with narrow anti-slip strips). The same applies to memorial products - they are polished to a mirror finish, without which they would look just dark gray.

The influence of color on technical characteristics

This structure not only provides the black color to the stone, but also radically improves its technical characteristics. First of all, black gabbro diabases, dolomites and basalts (not quite correctly called granites) have a higher density - on average about 3000-3100 kg/m3 versus 2600-2700 kg/m3 for classic granites. In addition, the much higher uniformity of the internal structure means the absence of layering - and therefore such stone is much easier and safer to process. Even building materials of the lowest price category (for example,) when split, give a three times lower flakiness index than similar ones made from traditional granites - which, of course, cannot but please builders. Finally, high density automatically means low porosity. This means that the water resistance of black granite-like rocks is the best among all representatives of the granite group (as well as abrasion - an extremely important quality for horizontal coatings).

Black granite gives any interior or facade a respectable appearance; this natural stone combines perfectly with various colored granites. The main evaluation criterion for the “blackness” of this type of granite is the presence of foreign inclusions and the overall intensity of the black color, since there are dark gray varieties of stone, which are sometimes mistakenly classified as black granites.

Black granites are widely used for both exterior and interior decoration of buildings and structures, as well as for the manufacture of various interior elements, as well as for the manufacture of granite monuments and other ritual products. Paths and areas lined with crushed or sawn paving stones made of black granite look great.

Black marble

The black color of marble, similar to granite, gives any interior respectability and solidity. It combines perfectly with other colors of stone; against the background of black marble finishing, any other bright interior details will look advantageous and truly original. Classic black marble has white veins, but there are also black marbles with grey, brown and red flecks. Black marble is one of the most presentable varieties. When using this natural stone in cladding walls, floors and other interior elements, a feeling of sophistication and aesthetic perfection of the room is created. The surface of slabs and products made from black marble is usually polished to a mirror finish.

Black granite an excellent finishing and building material that is widely in demand in various fields: thanks to its durability and strength, structures made from this material can last for several centuries.

Features of black granite

The physical and mechanical properties and excellent performance characteristics of this mineral allow it to be used as an expensive and sophisticated finish. Marble of this shade is usually used in the construction of buildings; it can beautifully and economically decorate the outside of any structure.

More details

During extraction and processing, the material is brought to a shine by polishing - then granite acquires an elegant, muted shine. If you want to use black granite in the decoration of buildings, buying it will be profitable and inexpensive.

Unpolished surfaces will have roughness, and a carefully polished stone, thanks to the shine of mica inclusions, will give any structure or structure impeccable severity and laconicism.

Areas of application

  • facades. The entire appearance of the building depends on how the facade looks. To emphasize its advantages and correctly fit the structure into the environment, it is customary to use natural stone mined by quarrying. Black granite will give the facades a unique and original look, which can be purchased in a variety and at reasonable prices. This finish will last for centuries. A facade made of such material will be resistant to mechanical damage, temperature changes, precipitation and moisture, and changing seasons. The elegant black granite facade increases the strength of the building. This finish will retain its attractive appearance for a very long time.
  • Building decor or. Inserts made from this material will be an interesting addition and a stylish design solution if granite is used along with building materials of contrasting shades.
  • Monuments and steles made of black granite will fit perfectly into the ensemble of an elite crypt. Only such a dark and austere mineral is capable of conveying an atmosphere of grief and regret. Monuments made from this stone are durable and strong, resistant to vandalism: in addition to this, the structures look great.
  • Interior decor. In its pure form, granite of this color is unlikely to be used for interior decoration. But in combination with other high-quality materials or types of stone of different shades, black can play an excellent decorative role. This stone can be successfully used in the decoration of mansions, luxury houses and cottages, and VIP housing. It will give any room exquisite rigor and completeness. Light-colored pieces of furniture and decor look great against a granite background.
