Step-by-step instructions for making a country toilet with your own hands

A full-fledged suburban area can hardly be imagined without a toilet. This primitive building is a necessary minimum for a comfortable pastime outside the city. The simplest solution to a country toilet is a cesspool, which can be easily done with your own hands without outside help, but there are options that will be harder to implement.

Preparation for work

First you need to decide on the design of the future toilet. The choice will depend on many factors: the desired cost of construction, frequency of use, ease of maintenance, and so on. Let's look at the most common designs.

Pit toilet

Of course, this is the most popular design in summer cottages and in all villages and villages. The reason is simple - it is not difficult to build it, because an ordinary pit will serve as a sewer. The sewage in such toilets evaporates or is absorbed into the ground.

It is easy to guess that the deeper the pit, the less often it will have to be cleaned. Usually the hole is simply dug in and a new one is created next to it. The structure itself above the pit (toilet frame) is limited only by your imagination - it can be absolutely anything, you just need to take care of ventilation and proper structural strength. Let's study the main types of frames:

wooden toilet

The choice of wood is justified by the low cost and ease of construction - minimal skills are enough to build it. A wooden structure can be decorated in different ways: cut out a window, burn a picture ... or at least stylize it as Baba Yaga's hut. Often lining is used as cladding.

Such country toilets, with due diligence and perseverance, turn into real works of architectural art. Such a building also has a practical advantage: when filling the pit, the house can be easily lifted and transferred to a new one.

Toilet from metal profile sheets

If there is material, it is even easier to build such a toilet than a wooden one. Make the frame from wood or metal pipes, and then simply sheathe it with slate sheets, and attach it with self-tapping screws or rivets. A metal closet gets very hot in summer, so you need to install it in a shaded place, and from the inside, for example, glue it with foam.

brick toilet

Measure and double-check everything several times before building it - naturally, it will not work to transfer it to a new place. Find a way to clean the cesspool in advance. Do not forget about the need to install a concrete floor.

Powder closet

This is the simplest type of toilet - sewage is collected in a small bucket (15-20 liters) installed under the toilet seat. In stores, you can buy a special container with a seat provided. After visiting the toilet, the waste is covered with ash or sawdust (peat can also be used). Indoors, it would be nice to install a box with these bulk materials.

The main disadvantage of closet powders is, of course, the need to often pour the contents of your bucket into the compost pit, and this is not a pleasant experience. But it is very easy to care for him, and you can place him in a country house (with proper ventilation).

peat toilet

This is the "big brother" of powder closet. The main difference is that here the peat is poured into the container (no need for an additional box with sawdust or peat).

play closet

And this is an advanced analogue of a toilet with a cesspool. A latrine of this type uses a cesspool of a more advanced type - its walls and bottom are sealed (a well breaks out - a hole is left for pumping out waste by a sewage machine).

For the possibility of convenient wiring of the hoses of the cesspool, an elongated pit is required. A huge drawback of such a system is the impossibility of purification in the winter. If you live in the country in winter, then install a pit heating system.

Selecting a location for installation

When choosing a location for installation, use the following guidelines:

  1. If you are planning to build a backlash closet or are going to clean the toilet with the help of vacuum trucks, then you need to leave a place for the entrance of a vacuum truck.
  2. Check out the health regulations. The required distance from the cesspool to the place of water intake is 25 meters, to the border of the site - 1 meter, to buildings - more than 5 meters.
  3. The dimensions of the base must be a square with an area of at least one square meter.
  4. Level horizontal and vertical surfaces with a spirit level.

Do-it-yourself construction of a birdhouse type toilet

The Birdhouse toilet is constructed of wood, any available material can be used for sheathing, the roof can be either single-pitched or gable. A cesspool is used to collect waste. You can create your own project or use ready-made drawings.

As an example, we can give the following dimensions for the Birdhouse toilet with a shed roof:

  • rear wall height - 2.2 m;
  • front wall height - 2.6 m;
  • base - at least 1x1 m;
  • width - at least 1 m.

List of required materials:

  1. Ruberoid - 2 m2.
  2. Concrete curb 2 m long - 2 pcs.
  3. Frame boards.
  4. Lining or boards for sheathing.
  5. Wooden beam - 1 pc.
  6. Galvanized steel sheet - 1 pc.
  7. Door block - 1 pc.
  8. Door hinges, pen or pencil, nails or self-tapping screws (depending on the sheathing), bolt or door lock.
  9. Paint or varnish.

Description of the process of building the "Birdhouse" in stages:

  1. Dig a cesspool at least 1x1x2 m in size. Do not forget that the dimensions of the toilet depend on the dimensions of the pit. Cover the bottom of the pit with a layer of broken brick or rubble.
  2. As the foundation of the structure, we install a concrete curb at a distance of no more than 25 cm from the edges of the pit - it will be our overlap. It should be buried so that the height of the concrete base above the ground is about 15 cm.
  3. We lay roofing material on our border as a moisture insulator (3-4 layers).
  4. We install a wooden frame and attach the selected sheathing to it - boards, lining, etc. Lay a board at least 0.5 cm thick on the floor. It is recommended to use hardwoods - oak, maple, larch and others.
  5. On the floor we make a hole up to 30 cm in diameter. Choose the shape at your discretion - rhombus, oval, heart, etc.
  6. We put up a door. To create at least minimal lighting, we make a window of a vending shape in it.
  7. We cut roofing material on the roof, you can use a steel sheet.
  8. We paint an almost finished toilet with oil paint or varnish.

During construction, special attention should be paid to ventilation - it is necessary to remove air from the pit so that an unpleasant smell leaves. To do this, you can take a pipe with a diameter of at least 10 centimeters. We cut a hole of the required diameter in the roof and floor of the toilet and fix the pipe to a height of at least 30 cm above the roof. All openings must be sealed (ordinary polyurethane foam will do). A deflector is installed at the end of the pipe - it will create the necessary traction.

The interior of the Birdhouse can be sheathed with foam (some use cardboard egg carts). Do the exterior cladding as you wish - you are limited only by your budget and imagination.
