Initiation as a student at the Higher School of Economics. HSE Day 2018: lectures, discussions and “Scientific battles”. Is it possible to celebrate not with your faculty?

We asked school graduates admitted to the National Research University Higher School of Economics 5 questions about the life of the University. How do HSE newcomers imagine student life, how do they plan to relax after classes, and what do they know about the traditions of the university?

1. What does a HSE student do besides study?

I guess he's sleeping. This is exactly what I'm going to do

The HSE student must be having a lot of fun)

Well, I’m not a student yet, but I hope I’ll have time for sports (especially snowboarding), music and art

If we take the summer, then this is daily volleyball for four hours. Meeting with friends, cleaning the house and preparing to move, which turns out to take a lot of time

Study again

What does a HSE student do besides study? In my opinion, nothing, funny, right? Just by listening to the guys at the admissions office, in the queues at the admissions office, at the public - the average HSE student has time to travel from Odintsovo or Dubkov to the university and back, and time to memorize lessons and everything that comes with it. Honestly, I don’t believe in this: it seems to me that a HSE student, by definition, should do something other than study, be it music, KVN, work in leadership teams, etc.

Sports, music, dancing (everyone has their own hobby) or, in the end, go to StS)

2. What is Porechye?

I had to Google it to find out the meaning of the word. Area along the river

I have no idea what a river is. It's like a village like this)

To be honest, I don’t know, but it reminds me of the name of something (a city, or a village, or an enterprise)

As the second-year students told me, this is a place where refrigerators and everything that comes to hand for entertaining students are flying.

As I was told, this is something like a boarding house where students “rest”

Something like a tour rally at school, but cooler

Unfortunately, I can’t say for sure about the river. I know that this is some kind of event in the summer, where HSE students take part. It seems like it's on the coast.

I read something about this strange word in the group. It seems to be connected with dedication, but, as everyone put it, “it’s tough.” Surely, soon I will know exactly its meaning)

This is not the first time I have received questions regarding the famous trip to Porechye (the Podmoskovye boarding house, if memory serves). Poreche is the key to unbridled fun

3. The best way to procrastinate

I'll answer later :)

Films, TV series and VKontakte

The best and only one: don’t get out from under the blanket in the morning, it’s safest there and evil deeds won’t get you

I don't put off important activities or get distracted while doing them. So I don't know

The best way to procrastinate is “oh, never mind, I’ll do it tomorrow”

Studying at HSE does not involve procrastination in principle.

The best way to procrastinate is to not have it at all. But, knowing that this is very difficult, and remembering a little school experience in this matter, I will say that it is best to sleep) Although this too remains to be found out.

4. What song did you prepare for exams to?

Songs by The Beatles

Under Two steps from hell - "Heart of courage"

During the preparation, I noticed that the harpsichord and clavichord magically increase efficiency, so Mozart was the best. But in the end it turned out that silence is the best assistant in cramming.

To a song? I had the album on repeat L "One - Sputnik. Well, the theme is this: ambition, success, conquering peaks.

You won't believe it - Navalny

I prepared without music, in silence

5. How would you spend the dedication?

I would like to make the dedication bright, unforgettable and fun, because this will be the beginning of a new stage in my life.

I haven’t been to one, so I have no idea how it’s actually carried out. I suspect that there will be some kind of ropes course and games from the school of organizers. Well, that's what I want)

You know, this should be the happy medium between the first day of school and the last bell.

To hold a dedicated... All I want is for everyone not to get drunk to the point of insanity, which is most likely impossible)) for me this is an event where you can meet people and have a great time, so I would be happy with everything that this may contribute)

So, to remember that it was, but to forget what happened on it

Mandatory with the entire course in order to get to know those with whom we will study better.

In the “7 Questions” section, we will discuss important phenomena, trends and issues of concern to many with an expert in this field. This time we decided to find out what posvyat is and what it is eaten with. The organizer of the initiation of political scientists, HSE student Ivan Alexandrov answered questions about this important day in the life of a student.

  1. Who organizes the dedication?

As a rule, the second year is engaged in initiation, although initiative older guys can also do this. Sometimes this may be an already formed group that has already worked on another event, as was the case, for example, in political science. Still, the best solution is to announce a general gathering and accept all the people who are ready to help.

  1. How does initiation as a student of the National Research University Higher School of Economics take place?

There are two understandings of what a dedicate is. The first is that it is dedicated as just an alcoholic get-together, a club of some kind. In another, it is understood as something very intimate, as a dedication itself, a moment of transferring experience, as an event related to team building.

The organizers are trying to keep up with two birds with one stone at the same time, combining non-alcoholic quests aimed at faculty-specific topics with an alcoholic program, also in a certain way tied to the students’ areas of interest.

Next is an entertainment program: a dance floor, a chill zone for a more relaxing holiday, even a versus on some programs (the first-year students had a request that was taken into account). As a result, everything dedicated is maximally subordinated to a certain logic, connected by a common outline.

  1. What to wear?

The weather in autumn is not kind: it will be quite cold. Naturally, the organizers have adapted the program to make it as warm as possible, and the bulk of the quests will be held indoors. The optimal solution in this situation would be bulbous clothing: many layers.

Wearing heels and an evening dress is not very smart, because if you decide to hang out outside, you will freeze.

At the same time, if the room is hot, there should be a reserve to remove something. Also, when going to a dedication, you need to take into account that this is a very unpredictable thing, you should take clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty: anything can happen! We advise you not to dress formally, but to be more practical when choosing an outfit.

  1. What should you take with you?

If you have, say, a food allergy, then you should definitely take pills with you. But nothing else particularly comes to mind. It’s easier to say what you definitely shouldn’t take: piercing and cutting objects (you can injure yourself or allow them to fall into the wrong hands) and expensive equipment (there will be a lot of people, and even if the lost item is found later, during its absence you will waste a lot of nerves ).

  1. Does it make sense for me to go if I don't drink?

This is the principled position of the organizers. There have been many scandals with dedications recently: MADI, Kemerovo State University. Many people have the impression that the dedicate is some kind of alcoholic party from which you may not return alive. Therefore, it is especially important to emphasize that even non-drinkers will find it interesting.

  1. Is it possible to celebrate not with your faculty?

There are two positions here. The first says that dedication is a kind of sacred ceremony, which can only be attended by students of one educational program. Another approach is that, although the party is designed for a specific direction, friends and partners of first-year students and organizers can come there. Both approaches are correct in their own way. The solution to this problem, of course, largely depends on the faculty.

So, for example, last year boys from other directions were actively invited to initiate philologists due to the lack of their male population.

  1. Is it possible to come to only one part of the initiation?

For reasons of team building, we highly recommend coming to the quests first. Because this is what freshmen will remember later. In a good or bad sense, but this is an element of common memory, common points when people still communicate with each other without being divided into companies. This moment is very important for the formation of a student community.

The terrible truth of initiations
the students

September is a special month for first-year students. Most of them await initiation - a symbolic rite, usually more reminiscent of an ordinary drinking party. For some, dedication ends with new acquaintances and pleasant memories, but more often the result is shame and the desire to transfer to another university. The rector of the Moscow Institute of Contemporary Art even had to resign after the dedication, during which a group of students suffered from alcohol poisoning. To understand the situation, VOS collected crazy stories from dedications and other student holidays.

In general, our initiations are held separately by faculties, I don’t know exactly when for whom. But usually they start on September 20 and continue until November 30. Most often everything takes place on campus or in a dorm. On the campus of the university there is something like a local club, where first there is a concert, and then a party and drinks.

There are no special initiation traditions: senior students ****** first-year students drink books, drink obscene chants about other faculties.

Some faculties even organize alcohol quests. It’s cool that there are about ten dedicated ones and they are on different days, that is, go and drink whenever you want and with whomever you want. Usually on Fridays, sometimes on Saturdays.

But the celebrations are not as fun as Physicist Day. After the concert on Physicist Day, real trash starts. Firstly, all this action lasts three to four days, some last longer. About 500 people gather on the main square, and some kind of ****** is going on there. After this party, I felt as if it was not a celebration of Physicist Day, but a clash with the police. And so on for three days. Everyone drinks everywhere, there are some competitions and events. There is even an annual rock-paper-scissors competition where iPods are raffled off.

The dedication takes place at the Metallurg stadium near Baumanka. The last time, it seems to me, about a thousand people gathered here. A thousand drunk techies.

Even the police avoid this place during the dedication, because how can they detain such a horde?

The trash is probably all standard: someone drank too much and threw up everything, someone was taken away in an ambulance. In principle, this is already the norm. I don’t even know about traditions. Usually they force the group to drink a tube of vodka, but this didn’t happen to me in my first year. Of course, graduates celebrate their graduation from university more cheerfully: they swim in fountains, ride on basins, douse themselves with beer and burn firecrackers. Not far from the fans, in general.

Usually, after the official part of the initiation in the university courtyard, everything continues in Miussky Park, where senior students try to drive as many people as possible. My dedication was really cool: firstly, there were a lot of people, and secondly, it was really fun. In subsequent years, everything was no longer so large-scale and organized. Then each faculty organizes something of its own for its first-year students, but this is a more secluded and, probably, civilized celebration. Usually the older ones get the younger ones drunk, and that’s it.

It was terrible when one guy weighing 50 kg drank so much that he passed out. He was laid out on a bench, which he vomited, and then taken away in an ambulance. Then, by the way, I saw him only twice at the university.

Anya

I didn’t go to my student initiation in my first year, having decided that drinking with a bunch of strangers in the park was not for me, but a little later I went to drink with a bunch of strangers in a cottage. I attended a student party, which I now consider to be my dedication. It all started quite calmly: there were about 20 friends of the birthday boy and guys from university. Everyone was drinking, smoking something, listening to music and talking. But this did not last long: at some point there were no longer 20 people in the house, but 40, then 50, and, it seems to me, in the end about a hundred students visited this unfortunate cottage during the night. There were a crowd of strange people at the fence who wanted to get inside. Some even climbed over the fence. More and more unknown characters appeared, who claimed that they came not for a birthday, but for the dedication of their university. In general, in the end the house was simply torn to hell, and a third of those present were robbed. Some Caucasians got into a fight with some basketball players, and it almost came to a point of stabbing. Then, due to spilled alcohol, the table caught fire, and I had to hide in the toilet from a crazy guy who pestered me with the words: “I am a man, you are a woman, we should have sex.”

In the morning everything was covered in fragments, blood, alcohol and vomit. The holiday was a success.

MEPhI

Ivan

When I was a freshman, no one was giving us anything, so I decided I needed to start this cool tradition of freshman initiation. Usually we rent a cottage for the guys from our faculty, buy alcohol and food and arrange a celebration. By the way, I don’t drink at dedications, because then I have to pump these children out if something happens. In fact, now the first-timers are no longer the same. Too crazy: as if they spent 18 years in captivity and such a party is the only opportunity to have fun. The funniest thing I remember was when one of the first-timers brought with him an exchange student from some African state or something, and he was so swollen that by the morning he looked like a zombie. And when he left his room, he caught the eye of a stoned guy who started yelling at the whole house: “Dudes, we have Ebola! We all die!" I spent half of that night locked in a room with a girl - our door was jammed. But instead of spending time usefully, we chatted about some stupid shit.

RUDN University

Anastasia

My initiation as a student took place in a rented cottage. The guys from our senior year gave us this unforgettable party (it would be better if I forgot). Firstly, this is RUDN University, multinationality and all that. Secondly, those with whom I managed to make friends were not allowed in by my parents, so I, one might say, was going to a party surrounded by strangers. Everything probably went like at all similar events: we drank a lot, talked, and organized some kind of competitions. But, apparently, due to inexperience, I simply got drunk.

I woke up next to the toilet, right on the floor. No one even carried me to the sofa!

Well, okay, before the sad end of the evening I managed to fight with one girl who said something unpleasant about me. And I was already very drunk, emotional, and I threw my whiskey and cola in her face. The blow was not long in coming, and, in general, we jostled a little. The next morning I was unbearably ashamed, I even thought about transferring to another university. But fortunately everything was somehow hush-hush. Probably the girl from the stream who got pregnant at the dedication overshadowed my story.
