We install the mixer in the bathroom yourself

Installing a mixer in the bathroom with your own hands is quite simple if you follow the instructions and basic installation rules. Depending on the location of the work performed, there are two options for installing the mixers: on the wall surface and directly on the bathtub.

The choice of mixer model (wall-mounted or recessed) depends on its location. In addition to the design, the length and shape of the water drain spout, as well as the length of the shower hose, are taken into account. The material of the mixer is no less important - there are products made of brass and silumin on the market.

Mixers made of brass are distinguished by their greater weight and better quality compared to products made from silumin. Depending on the model, the composition of the kit may differ, but its main parts are unchanged: the mixer body, the gander (spout), eccentrics (for the wall model), gaskets, a hose with a shower head and decorative covers. There may be water supply pipes (for the flush model) and parts for attaching the shower to the wall.

To calculate the installation height of the mixer, the edge of the bath is taken as a reference point. At the same time, such a moment is taken into account - where the water is planned to be drained (only into the bath or also into the washbasin). If only a bath is used, it is customary to mount the mixer at a height of 20-25 cm from the edge of the bath. There are no strict standards for this value, the design of the model, the availability of various accessories and, most importantly, ease of use must be taken into account. The instructions for a good quality faucet contain recommendations for the height of its mounting.

Note! If a washbasin is added, then the calculation is carried out from its edge. In this case, the mixer is mounted at a distance of 25 cm from the edge of the washbasin.

What you need to install

Before starting work, check the completeness and quality of the kit. The threads on the eccentrics and nuts are checked separately. Then you must first assemble the entire mixer.

When replacing the mixer, the eccentrics, if they are in good condition, do not leak, you can leave the same. They allow you to adjust the dimensions between the mixer axles and the distance between the pipes in the wall.

Necessary tools for installation: adjustable wrench, electric drill with attachments, FUM tape, dowels.

Installation on polypropylene pipes in the wall

The mixer is mounted on polypropylene pipes using a plastic strip with an internal metal insert. The fixing of the strip to the pipes is carried out so that the outer edge does not protrude above the surface of the tile.

Note! Usually the plank is recessed into the wall by at least 3-4 cm, and the standard distance between their axes is 150 mm.

To install the mixer on the wall:

  1. Check the presence of all parts in the kit and clean the bar to which we will screw the mixer;
  2. Install eccentrics. To do this, you need to check their position inside the fittings along the length and then wind the FUM tape (flax) onto a narrower threaded part (which will go into the wall). Winding is carried out along the thread with tension, in several layers (usually about 10 turns) in order to completely hide the unevenness of the thread. It runs from the edge of the product in the form of a cone. After sealing the thread, screw the eccentrics in turn into the outlets in the wall (along the thread) and carefully tighten them all the way with an adjustable wrench;
  3. Attach decorative covers to ensure that the length of the eccentrics is correct and that the remaining threads are long enough to screw on the mixer. The covers must adhere tightly to the wall surface, without a gap. After checking, they should be removed;
  4. Insert gaskets into the mixer body, and screw it to the eccentrics - check the accuracy of the position of the eccentrics along the axes. The gasket is laid with the ribbed side inside the mixer, and the smooth side in the direction of the eccentric leads. Then open the water and check how tightly the connection was mounted;
  5. If no water seeps out, remove the mixer and mount the decorative covers. Screw the mixer to the eccentrics by hand, then completely tighten the nuts using an adjustable wrench. Compression should be done carefully so as not to spoil the shiny coating of the mixer and not to pinch the gasket inside. Place a rag between the key and the nut for insurance;
  6. Turn on the water and check how the finished system works.

Shower installation

The next step is to connect to the shower mixer. To connect the shower correctly, you should:

  1. Insert a gasket into the nut at the end of the hose that connects to the shower head and tighten it by hand;
  2. Another gasket is inserted into the second end, and it is connected directly to the mixer (screwed into the shower hole);
  3. Mark the mounting location on the wall. For this, the height of the users and the length of the hose are taken into account (it should not touch the edge of the bath);
  4. Screw the holder for the shower head onto the wall. To do this, use an electric drill to make holes, insert dowels into them. Then screw the fasteners to the dowels with screws and insert the shower holder.

Installing the faucet on an acrylic bathtub

For mounting on the edge of an acrylic bathtub, flush-mounted mixer models are used. This design saves space, improves the interior (the shower hose is located under the bath), the bath is quickly and without splashes filled with water. Mortise bath mixers give out two types of jet: laminar (round) and cascade (wide and flat, there are models with illumination). They have a more attractive design and a larger spout capacity.

Note! This type of design requires the selection of a high quality shower hose, since it is always bent under the bathtub and is the first to fail.

An important point is the quality of the mixer itself - it passes a large amount of water under pressure, which means that the load on the structural parts increases.

To install a mortise mixer on the side of an acrylic bathtub, you need:

  1. Mark the holes for the mixer, water drainage spout and shower;
  2. Using an electric drill, drill the holes along the markings, bore them to the specified size and grind the irregularities. For a drill, a drill is used in the form of a crown cutter;
  3. Wrap the FUM tape along the thread on the adapters for the water supply hoses. Winding is carried out with tension in several layers to smooth the thread. Screw the adapters into the fittings of the water supply pipes, which are recessed into the wall;
  4. Install nuts on the holes in the bath rim;
  5. Install the gasket in the base of the drain spout, screw it to the side of the bathtub and squeeze;
  6. Connect two flexible pipes for water supply (first thinner) to the mixer and crimp well as well;
  7. Wrap the FUM tape on the thread of the third tube. This tube is used to connect the mixer to the main unit, which distributes the water supply to the spout and shower;
  8. Screw the compression nut onto the mixer from below, install it in the hole and secure it with the second nut from above;
  9. Fix the shower in the prepared hole and connect its hose to the main mixer block;
  10. Screw the two flexible pipes of the mixer to the adapters in the wall;
  11. Turn on the water and check the quality of the installation.

Some bath models are already available with tap holes, which makes the task easier.

Note! When installing the bath, it is necessary to leave free access to the mixer structure in case of an emergency. For this purpose, removable plastic screens are used.

Angles for installing the mixer on the bath rim

One of the innovations in the world of faucets for acrylic bathtubs - corners that cut into the side of the bathtub and act as adapters for mounting on the bathtub wall mixers. They are made of brass, chrome plated, and fit perfectly into the interior design of the bathroom.

Corner adapters for mounting a wall mixer

The use of such a mounting kit turns any wall-mounted mixer into a mortise, which allows it to be attached to the side of the bathtub.
